Differences Between the Male and Female Pelvis
Even though individual pelvic structures vary slightly from person to person, male and female pelvises have consistant differences. The following are the biggest differences between the male and female pelvis
- The female inlet is larger and more circular
- The female pelvis is shallower and has thinner, lighter bones than that of a male
- The female ilia flare more laterally than that of a male
- The female sacrum is shorter and less curved
- The male ischial spines are longer and closer together (making the outlet smaller)
- The female pubic arch is more rounded because the angle of the pubic arch is greater. The male pubic arch is less than 90 degrees, whereas the female's is greater than 90 degrees.
